DESCRIPTION:International Mountain Day is celebrated annually on 11 December to create awareness about the importance of mountains to life\, to highlight the opportunities and constraints in mountain development\, and to build alliances that will bring positive change to mountain peoples and environments around the world. \nThe UN General Assembly declared 2002 the UN International Year of Mountains\, and on this occasion\, it designated 11 December\, from 2003 onwards\, as International Mountain Day. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) coordinates the annual celebration of the Day to foster greater awareness of mountain issues.

DESCRIPTION:As exemplified by the ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic major infectious diseases and epidemics have devastating impacts on human lives\, wreaking havoc on long-term social and economic development. Global health crises threaten to overwhelm already overstretched health systems\, disrupt global supply chains and cause disproportionate devastation of the livelihoods of people\, including women and children\, and the economies of the poorest and most vulnerable countries. \nIn the event of the absence of international attention\, future epidemics could surpass previous outbreaks in terms of intensity and gravity. There is great need of raising awareness\, the exchange of information\, scientific knowledge and best practices\, quality education\, and advocacy programmes on epidemics at the local\, national\, regional and global levels as effective measures to prevent and respond to epidemics.

DESCRIPTION:Education is a human right\, a public good and a public responsibility. \nThe United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 24 January as International Day of Education\, in celebration of the role of education for peace and development. \nWithout inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong opportunities for all\, countries will not succeed in achieving gender equality and breaking the cycle of poverty that is leaving millions of children\, youth and adults behind. \nToday\, 244 million children and youth are out of school\, and 771 million adults are illiterate. There is a crisis in foundational learning\, literacy and numeracy skills among young learners. 617 million children and adolescents cannot read and do basic math; less than 40% of girls in sub-Saharan Africa complete lower secondary school and some four million children and youth refugees are out of school. Their right to education is being violated and it is unacceptable. It’s time to transform education.

SUMMARY:International Day of Women and Girls in Science
DESCRIPTION:The International Day of Women and Girls in Science is an annual observance adopted by the United Nations General Assembly to promote the full and equal access and participation of females in Science\, Technology\, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields. The United Nations General Assembly passed resolution 70/212 on 22 December 2015\, which proclaimed the 11th day of February as the annual commemoration of the observance. A theme is selected annually to highlight a particular focus and area of discussion around a focus point for gender equality in science. \nThe International Day of Women and Girls in Science is implemented annually by UNESCO in collaboration with UN Women. Both organisations work with national governments\, intergovernmental organisations\, civil society partners\, universities and corporations in order to achieve the shared goal of promoting the role of women and girls in scientific fields and celebrate those already successful in the field.

DESCRIPTION:At its sixty-second session\, in November 2007\, the General Assembly of the United Nations proclaimed 20 February as World Day of Social Justice. The day is to be observed for the first time in 2009. \n\nMember states were invited to devote this special day to the promotion of concrete national activities in accordance with the objectives and goals of the World Summit for Social Development and the twenty-fourth session of the General Assembly\, entitled “World Summit for Social Development and beyond: achieving social development for all in a globalizing world”. \nAs recognized by the World Summit\, social development aims at social justice\, solidarity\, harmony and equality within and among countries and social justice\, equality and equity constitute the fundamental values of all societies. To achieve “a society for all” governments made a commitment to the creation of a framework for action to promote social justice at national\, regional and international levels. They also pledged to promote the equitable distribution of income and greater access to resources through equity and equality and opportunity for all. The governments recognized as well that economic growth should promote equity and social justice and that “a society for all” must be based on social justice and respect for all human rights and fundamental freedoms.
